A response to the Questions raised

I received quite a response from the last post on the blog regarding the Golden Compass.

Some thought it was a bunch of Hooey, and that they had read Harry Potter, Narnia, and the Lord of the Rings. And they thought that all the talk from the religious groups were less than glamorous and showed their ignorant and ridiculous ideas and beliefs.

They think that the movie release of the Golden Compass is nothing more than a fantasy film made from a well written book. But I disagree. The author of Narnia wrote the chronicles in order to explain the Word of God. The author of the Lord of the Rings wrote his books reflecting on the horrors of War in particular the 2nd World War. And Harry Potter was written with no qualms or hidden meaning except to entertain young minds with Witches, Wizards, and the occult.

The difference with this trilogy starting with The Golden Compass is to portray the Church/religion as an evil machine grown out of a lie. It isn't difficult to find on the net that the author Philip Pullman is an atheist and has written the book with the expressed purpose of enticing the young to consider atheism. In the last book the character called God is killed, and in the book it is portrayed as a good thing.

How can that be considered good? Except from the point of view of an athiest?

Is that what we want to teach our children? Do we want to teach our children that bad things are "OK" as long as we didn't do them?

I've chosen not to promote it, how about you?
